OshSU Hosts Critical Talks on Climate Change Impact in Central Asia

The third international scientific conference on climate change in Central Asia, jointly organized by Osh State University and the the Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX) program, is taking place.

The event was attended by Peter van Oevelen, director of GEWEX international project, Toktogul Mamashov, head of the Osh regional department of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Control of the Kyrgyz Republic, Kanatbek Zakirov, head of the Environmental Monitoring Department of the Osh regional department of the mentioned ministry, Kudaiberdi Kozhobekov, rector of Osh State University, Roman Kalmatov, the dean of the International Medical Faculty, and about 50 international experts and scientists from abroad.

Meteorological, climatological and hydrological data will be determined within the framework of the conference. In addition, there are discussions on the development of relevant climate models for Central Asia, development and coordination of observation networks, climate adaptation, identification of specific data needs and potential economic analysis.

GEWEX program is a scientific organization that monitors climate change in the world. At the conference, it was noted that GEWEX program is conducting a large scientific project in 3 regions of Kyrgyzstan on the upcoming climate change in Central Asia. According to it, it was said that it is planned to build an observatory in 3 places of Kyrgyzstan: Issyk-Kul, Suusamyr, and Alai. Osh State University will also participate in the implementation of the project.

“Currently, in accordance with the tasks set by President S. Japarov in his speech at the UN on the transition to a green economy, a lot of scientific research work is underway at Osh State University. At the event, it was presented that the Tokyo Medical and Dental University is jointly implementing a $5 million project to create a center for “Development of an air pollution assessment system based on satellite data and regional chemical transport modeling and air pollution research”. The event will continue until May 1,” said Ruslan Arapbayev, vice-rector of OshSU for scientific affairs.
