Osh State University has launched a scientific monitoring station that enables continuous monitoring of air quality both in the city of Osh and indoors.
The station is located on the university’s medical clinic premises and is equipped with modern air quality monitoring systems. Currently, about 50% of the equipment planned under the project has been delivered and installed. Additional sensors and server equipment will be installed at the next stage.
On August 17, Rector Kudayberdi Kozhobekov, together with researchers from Tokyo, inspected the equipment installed at the station and assessed its operation. According to the rector, the main goal of the project is to scientifically study air pollution in Osh, collect regular air quality data and use the results for research.
“This project has been underway for two years. It is being implemented jointly by Tokyo Medical University and Osh State University. With a budget of USD 5 million and support from JICA, modern sensors and equipment are being supplied and installed in Kyrgyzstan, particularly in the southern region. These technologies have no previous equivalent in the country. Air quality both outdoors and indoors in Osh will now be continuously monitored, while the data will be collected and stored daily on a dedicated server,” said Kudayberdi Kozhobekov.
The data collected by the station will be continuously stored and analyzed on a server. The results will help identify factors contributing to air pollution, assess the environmental situation scientifically and support further research.
The project also places particular emphasis on training young researchers. Students, master’s students and PhD students at Osh State University will be able to conduct research on air quality, ecology and climate change using the station.
In addition, specialists from Tokyo will conduct a special training program for Osh State University staff on the operation and maintenance of the equipment and methods for processing the collected data.
The IRCAPS research center, dedicated to the study of air pollution, was opened at Osh State University on November 18, 2025. The five-year project began in 2025 with financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Agency for Science and Technology. The project’s main partner is the Institute of Science Tokyo.
IRCAPS focuses on comprehensive research into air pollution, continuous monitoring, scientific data collection and the integration of research findings into the educational process.
