Osh State University has opened a Kyrgyz Studies Center dedicated to researching the history, language and culture of the Kyrgyz people.

The center houses nearly 500 books on the Kyrgyz language and literature, the Manas epic, history, ethnography, folklore and culture, as well as around 200 issues of the “Shookum” journal, national artifacts and other works. Most of the materials come from the personal collection of the center’s director, Candidate of Historical Sciences Abdymalip Murzakmetov.

The new center will provide scholars, faculty members, students and master’s students with an opportunity to conduct research and hold discussions and meetings on current issues in Kyrgyz studies.

OshSU Rector Kudayberdi Kozhobekov noted that one of the main goals of establishing the center is to bring together valuable materials that were previously kept in scholars’ personal libraries and homes and create a research environment for students and young researchers.

At the opening of the Kyrgyz Studies Center, the staff of the Department of Kyrgyz Literature presented a theatrical performance highlighting the role of Kyrgyz literature in society.

For information: In addition to the Kyrgyz Studies Center, OshSU also operates Kazakh, Uzbek, Japanese and other language and culture centers.
