SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION LABORATORY
Simultaneous Interpretat
ion Laboratory founded in 2015 with the help of
university administration at the Faculty of World Languages and Cultures
has provided a real working environment to our students for their
interpreting practices through Conference system and becomes the first
institution in Kyrgyzstan to use this system. Our experienced academic
staff allong with this efficient system that allows a large variety of oral
translation exercises such as written text interpreting, consecutive
interpreting, simultaneous interpreting give our students the opportunity
to have the best preparation possible for the professional life. Different
laboratory systems are used in Kyrgyzstan. This system is available only in
our laboratory.
Our laboratory enables students to become competent in the document
translation. Our students get acquainted with an atmosphere similar to an
authentic working place. They have the opportunity to be one step ahead
thanks to learning translation technologies and getting familiar with
interpreting equipment and setting through authentic audio-visual materials
and simulation practices. The graduates work as translators and
interpreters in private companies, governmental institutions, banks, trade
chambers, municipalities, educational institutions.
The laboratory is for 4 workplaces, which allows conducting simultaneous and consecutive interpreting from English, German, French, Kyrgyz into Russian and vice versa. The creation of such a laboratory allows us to raise the teaching of the translation aspects of foreign languages to a new qualitative level. Because, thanks to the equipment used, the translator translates simultaneously with the speaker′s speech, he does not need to pause to ensure that the translator has time to translate. This simultaneous perception of oral speech and the generation of translation is the main feature of simultaneous translation. Special equipment is a simultaneous translation system that operates on the basis of wireless voice transmission, which is a stationary or collapsible cabin (booth), where a simultaneous translation unit is located, which includes 4 pairs of headphones and microphones for translators, as well as a set of headphones or portable receivers for 200 participants.
The very possibility of simultaneous translation is explained by the fact that in modern languages about 50% of words fall to words that do not contain any new information. In addition, it should be borne in mind that a certain amount of information is still not perceived by listeners.
Due to the extreme complexity of this type of translation requires a very thorough long-term training. In addition, the implementation of simultaneous translation requires maximum mental stress and therefore the possibility of its implementation is not available to everyone.
Each participant of the event is supplied with an individual IR receiver with headphones and can independently choose the language he needs. Any of the 5 different channels of simultaneous interpretation equipment can be selected by simply scrolling the menu of the digital receiver.
Thanks to special digital technologies, the equipment for simultaneous interpretation can provide sound in the headphones of the listener the same as at the input. High signal-to-noise ratio, built-in correction, resistance to interference from all types of lighting systems provide clean sound regardless of the features of the venue.
The system of simultaneous interpretation is based on the division of language channels into working languages, that is, on the possibility for different participants to listen to speeches and debate at an event in different languages at the same time. With the help of synchronous translation receivers equipped with a channel selector, the participant selects their own language and then listens to all speeches only on it.
During the work of the simultaneous translation laboratory, interpreters translated the following events from English into Russian and Kyrgyz, from Russian and Kyrgyz into English, and from Kyrgyz into Russian:
