By the decree of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in 1951, when the Osh Pedagogical Institute (now OshSU) was formed, the faculty of physics and mathematics was also formed as part of the educational institution. Candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, associate professor F.I. Polovikov and Shamgunovy made a huge contribution to the foundation and strengthening of the faculty and department. The department of experimental and theoretical physics was founded in 1965. From the day of its foundation until 1985, the department was headed by associate professor F.N. Zaitov, from 1986 to 1991, associate professor J. Egemberdiev, from 1991 to 1998, professor B. Arapov, from 1998 to 2007, associate professor A. Usarov. September 2007 until April 2021, it was led by Honored Scientist of the Kyrgyz Republic, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor B. Arapov. From April 2021 to the present, it is headed by Associate Professor M. Ch. Oskonbaev, Ph.D.
